$1 MILLION GOAL FOR SIGHT DAY CHALLENGE

Logo for Optometry Giving Sight charity project

Optometry Giving Sight has an ambitious goal of $1 million for its 2014 World Sight Day Challenge, which raised $850,000 worldwide in 2013. The event helps raise money for global eyecare needs. For example, $100 can help provide 20 people with access to an eye exam and glasses and $1,200 could pay a month’s salary for an optometrist to see up to 40 patients a day. Information: givingsight.org.

E-COMMERCE TOOL TO LAUNCH SOON

Lens Ferry, a service from CooperVision and its subsidiary WebSystem3, will allow contact lens wearers to order replacement contact lenses from any manufacturer via their mobile device, tablet or computer for fast shipment to their homes via ABB Optical. After the in-office visit, a practice enrolls the wearer and verifies the prescription. The wearer selects from buying options, including any insurance benefits and applicable manufacturers’ rebates. ECPs can send the wearer custom-branded reorder reminders by text or email via LensFerry. The system, intended to help ECPs compete with online vendors, is now in a beta test and will likely roll out to other practices by the end of 2014.

CRIZAL PREVENCIA NOW ON VSP PLANS

Essilor’s Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP, as well as through EyeMed and Humana. The lenses selectively block blue-violet light that’s a risk factor in age-related macular degeneration, while allowing blue-turquoise light that supports healthy sleep cycles, memory and cognitive function. The lenses feature UV protection 25 times better than without any lens.

AOA OFFFERS TRAINING ON CDS

Help your staff serve patients and run the office more smoothly with a new training program available on three audio CDs from the American Optometric Association. The Paraoptometric Skill Builder Training Program covers a variety of topics for various job responsibilities in 20-minute units. The “start and stop” feature allows staff to pick up where they left off in their last session. As an AOA associate member benefit — AOA member ODs may enroll their optometric staff as AOA associate members at no charge— the beginner level CD is offered online for free, and discounted member pricing is available on the intermediate and advanced level CDs. Information: aoa.org/marketplace-homepage.

VISION WEST PARTNERS UP

Vision West and Shamir are teaming up for enhanced rewards through Shamir’s RCPV Rewards program. There is no minimum for Vision West members to sell, and all lenses purchased from an authorized Vision West Vendor lab through Dec. 31, will be eligible. (Enrollment is required.) Vision West also recently announced a partnership with adjustable eyewear company Adlens. Members can buy Adlens eyewear through exclusive discounts and get customized training and materials. Your male customers have nothing to worry about. Spring/summer 2015’s vast selection ensures that somewhere out there, there’s the perfect pair of sunglasses for every man. In shapes for the coming season, men can choose from elegant pantos, modified aviators, easy-to-wear wraparounds and more. Last summer’s mirrored lenses still burn hot, but in vibrant new color themes. And patterns range from wood-grain to camouflage, with even a denim effect thrown in for a little laid-back fun. With so much that’s new, do the classics still rate? Of course! Subtler shades of blue and gray and classic tortoiseshell will continue to rank among next year’s favorites. DESIGNER INSIGHTS

Henrik Orgreen designer interview photo

Henrik Ørgreen

Founder, Ørgreen

What are the 2015 trends in sunwear for men?

We do what we like and feel. This makes the mission much more complicated. The design and color solutions that look simple and work are seldom the easiest to create. The challenge is to be seasonal — and timeless — while being totally of the moment. A strong opinion and a well-developed gut feeling are priceless when doing this.

Are things moving toward adventurous or classic?

I would say it is a combination. You see a lot of brands trying to be retro, but we see this retro wave fading away. At Ørgreen, we play with new interpretations. Using techniques, material, shapes and certainly colors, we achieve a modern retro look. So I would say less adventurous, as men very often prefer something more settled, but that is not retro all over again!

How do Ørgreen designers work with color for men?

We like to study some of the subcultures where masculinity and color play a big role, especially custom cars and motorcycles and their distinctive paint tones and use of color. Overall it is my understanding that men want colors that are easy to understand. It is a balance of giving people what they did not know they wanted, together with something they know and feel comfortable with. I like it when men dare to wear hues they consider more usually as female colors. I like the scent of a free spirit and nonconformist.

Step boldly into the future with eyewear
featuring high-tech materials and design

Eyewear’s horizons are expanding. Materials continue their march into the future, with traditional zyl and classic metals joined by an impressive variety of super high-tech solutions allowing for lighter, more functional eyewear that refuses to concede any style points. Over the next year, expect to see increased use of carbon fiber, rubber, and grilamid, as well as patented miracle materials like Silhouette’s SPX or BLAC’s polyamide material. But it’s not just in materials where innovation is happening. The year’s most notable technological advances also include a collection of brilliantly creative hinges, manufacturing techniques borrowed from the fine arts, and state-of-the-art lens technologies that put harmful rays in their place. The future is here. — C L O D A G H

Giovanni Lo Faro eyewear designer interview photo

DESIGNER INSIGHTS

Giovanni Lo Faro

Managing Director, Modo Eyewear

During your time in optics, what have been the key technological breakthroughs in eyewear design?

The use of titanium is definitely one. It’s the perfect material for a frame, being so light and resistant. And the beta-Ti variant makes it so pleasantly flexible. MODO advocated titanium from the very start, with our own minimalistic and function-driven style. Our latest declination combines it with colorful and mounting-friendly TR90 plastic.

What has been your most successful innovation in the last few years?

Our Paper Thin collection is the wildest success we’ve experienced to date. It’s made of a beta-titanium chassis combined with a TR90 plastic eye rim. The press is raving about it and our customers are loving it. We think it’s because it blends the color and warmth of a plastic frame with the comfort of a titanium frame.

What’s ahead for MODO?

Our upcoming collection extends the Paper Thin collection into new shapes and colors, and a semi-rimless construction — the ultimate in lightness and comfort.

Iristocracy frames without lenses

Iristocracy sells frames online. But it sells them without lenses — and connects buyers to an ECP who can help them get the best lenses and an updated prescription. (Users get a $50 Visa gift card in return if they send in proof that they filled their frames at an ECP.) Through its new Ambassador program, Iristocracy ships a retail try-on kit of four frames chosen by the customer to a participating ECP, who earns a revenue share on any frames the customer buys from the kit (plus any profit from lenses and the eye exam). Iristocracy CEO Natasha Vora says the program is ideal for practices that can’t stock as much inventory as they’d like, as well as eyewear shops that would like to boost their optical selection of high-end designers. EYECARE STARTUPS GET A SHOWCASE

Phoropter-less refraction technology from DigitalVision Systems and presbyopia-reversing eye drops from Encore Vision were voted the “most poised for success” and “most innovative and disruptive” among eyecare inventions showcased at the inaugural Future in Focus event before Vision Expo West. DigitalVision System’s Vision Optimizer virtual refraction platform, developed with Georgia Tech, is in clinical trials now. Bill Burns of Encore Vision told participants that the company’s eye drops lessened lens stiffening in pre-clinical trials. A day before the conference, the Wall Street Journal reported that startups addressing eye problems drew $848.9 million in 2013, the most for any body part. A second Future in Focus event is set before Vision Expo East 2015 in March. Information: thefutureinfocus.com

EYE BIZ LEADERS LAUNCH NEW APPS

Two big vision care companies have recently launched apps, and another should debut soon. Both are available now in the App Store. Meanwhile, Essilor is partnering with AllAboutVision.com to create a mobile app, AskAboutEyes. Dr. Paul Karpecki will manage a network of paid ECPs across the country to answer users’ questions on eye health. Information: invmag.us/11148

Selling Guide: Multifocal Contacts

$
0
0
Multifocal contact lenses hold promise as a big growth category for ECPs, especially among members of Generation X. Those at the leading edge of this group are just getting acquainted with presbyopia. But they also grew up wearing contacts — and no matter how hip glasses get, many people in their 40s are reluctant to start wearing them. (Bausch + Lomb’s consumer website address for its multifocals? goodbyereaders.com.)

Advances in multifocal contacts make them a good bet for more wearers, yet many people still experience difficulty getting a good fit for all distances. For these patients, keep an eye on product introductions. For example, Visioneering Technologies plans an early 2015 launch for its recently approved NaturalVue Multifocal 1 Day Disposables, with one “Universal” ADD for up to 3.00D of equivalent near power, and technology “inspired by how a camera aperture channels light,” according to the company’s news release.

Many people who might benefit from multifocal contacts don’t know the lenses exist. So make a point to talk about them with your patients. — JULIE FANSELOW

This article originally appeared in the January 2015 edition of INVISION.

Selling guide for multifocal contacts

Smart Ways to Sell More Multifocal Contacts

Talk with the patient about day-to-day activities and visual comfort throughout the day. This can provide insight into whether the patient may have an underlying anterior surface medical eye condition to address before a contact lens fitting. — Dr. Millicent Knight, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care

I’ve found that many patients ignore the small, slow changes their eyes are undergoing. Most do not know there is new contact lens technology available, so they are not asking or voicing their concerns about their eyestrain at near distances while in their doctor’s offices. — Dr. Rhonda Robinson, Bausch + Lomb

For an early presbyope, I tell the patient how much better they will feel especially at the end of the day when their eyes are relaxed from their near work. These patients are many times in denial about aging and don’t consider multifocal lenses because they can still see up close, even though they have to increase font size or hold their arms out. — Robinson

Discuss the changes that accompany presbyopia, especially for people who do continuous near-point work. Demonstrate or discuss how the symptoms may appear: tromboning material from near to far, eye fatigue, and eyes watering. — Knight

For more mature presbyopes, I tell them how much better they will see with the ability to look in all directions at all distances, near, far and everywhere in-between, which is a considerable advantage over multifocal glasses. No more distorted vision when walking up and down stairs, no more having to point their nose to what they want to see, no more having to lift their chin to see the computer which sits straight in front of them, and no more having to hunt for misplaced reading glasses. Fitting multifocal contact lenses is an opportunity to improve the quality of presbyopic patients’ lives. — Robinson

Talk about options for addressing presbyopia including multifocals. Set expectations for how they can best enhance the majority of visual needs. Emphasize that contact lenses may be worn full- or part-time, depending on individual needs. Have staff available who can train new contact lens wearers. Boost compliance and customer satisfaction by having contact lenses in inventory. — Knight
